Chronic Pelvic Pain

Do you have anal, penile or testicular pain?

Do you have pelvic or low abdominal pain, bladder or bowel irritation or pressure?

Do you have pain with sitting due to tailbone or coccyx pain?

Chronic pelvic pain is often poorly understood and is very distressing both physically and emotionally.  It can go undiagnosed for many years and affects men of all ages, ethnicities and social backgrounds.  Interestingly it is more common than you would think with 8% of men suffering at some stage in their lives.
 
An inability to relax your pelvic floor muscles results in chronically tight muscles that are painful and can lead to ongoing pelvic, sexual, coccyx, bladder or bowel pain.
 
You may have been diagnosed with chronic prostatitis or painful bladder syndrome.  Know that you are not alone and something can be done!

Trigger points are tight knots in muscles (x) and can cause referred pain (dotted/shaded red)

Common symptoms:

  • Pain in the penis, testes or anus

  • Pain with erection, ejaculation or orgasm

  • Pain with sitting or tight clothing

  • Tailbone or coccyx pain

  • Involuntary pelvic floor muscle spasm

  • Pain with a full bladder or bowel or soon after emptying

 
Possible causes:

  • Tight pelvic floor muscles

  • Overuse of core / abdominal muscles

  • Irritation, injury or compression of a nerve (including following pelvic surgery)

  • Recurrent infections of prostate or bladder

  • Genetic factors

  • Psychological factors such as mood, high stress, fear, relationship issues or past abuse

 
What can be done?

  • We are specifically trained in this complex area of pain and will work with you to design an individual program to meet your specific needs

  • A personalised pelvic floor muscles exercise program with help you relax and release these overactive pelvic floor muscles

  • Muscle tightness can be released (including the use of Dry Needling) to reduce pain

  • Advice on reducing aggravating factors to ensure long term resolution of pain

  • Education on how to use the muscles around this area correctly to help reduce pain
