Erectile Dysfunction

Do you have difficulty getting an erection?

Having difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection is common and can affect men of all ages, however is more common as men age.  Reduced sexual function is very distressing and can affect sexual intimacy, self-esteem, confidence, relationships and quality of life.
 
There are many factors that can affect erectile function including weak pelvic floor muscles.  Research indicates that men with strong pelvic floor muscles have better erectile function.  So you are not alone and something can be done!

Common symptoms:

  • An erection that takes a long time to achieve

  • An erection that is not hard enough for penetration

  • An erection that is lost prematurely

 
Possible causes:

  • Weakened pelvic floor muscles due to straining with constipation, heavy lifting at work or gym and ageing

  • Certain pelvic surgery eg. prostatectomy

  • Diabetes

  • Vascular issues such as high blood pressure

  • Certain medications

  • Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease or Multiple Sclerosis

  • Lifestyle factors such as smoking, drinking alcohol and inactivity

  • Psychological factors, anxiety and depression

  • Learn where the pelvic floor muscles are and how to use them

  • Specific exercises will help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles

  • Education on how to use these muscles in your daily activities including exercise or at work

  • Advice on preventing further weakness of these muscles and reducing aggravating factors
